Monday Morning Motivator – How Deep Are Your Roots?

“When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” Ephesians 3:14-17 (NLT)

I am a (very) part-time gardener and have had all sorts of gardens, from 1 small pot to hundreds and hundreds of feet of vegetables one summer. When a new season starts, i sometimes wonder if they are ever going to took root and grow and produce fruit. I get very impatient about that and try everything I can to try and get it to happen faster. The problem is, there’s only one way it’s going to happen – it takes time. Time for the plant to grow, for its roots to grow deep and the plant to grow tall and strong, then and only then will it produce fruit. There’s no shortcut here, no matter how hard I try.

Sadly, I fall into this trap in life as well, do you? You want an outcome and you try every shortcut you can to get there, but it usually crashes and burns. When it comes to living for God, and developing a solid relationship with him that can generate fruit it’s exactly the same as my plants. I have to spend the time with him in His Word and in prayer so I can grow my roots deep – in Him! Paul’s recommendation to us is simple – God has promised that He will pour his unlimited resources on us, he will empower us with the ultimate inner strength, through His Spirit – all we have to do is let our roots grow deep and strong in Him. We are to focus on Him and His love, then and only then are we ready to produce the fruit He has promised. It’s not easy, but it can be so rewarding, just like when you pick that fruit or vegetable after a long season of waiting for it to grow.

Today you have the choice, live a shallow life that causes your faith to wither and die over and over again or grow your roots deep in God’s love. Which will you choose?
